Phuket is ready to host its first international marathon since the pandemic this June 11 and 12
The Supersports Laguna Phuket Marathon is set to take place this year on June 11 and 12, 2022 in Bang Tao Beach. Thousands of runners are due to arrive in Phuket from around the world and other parts of Thailand to compete in the event’s full marathon, half-marathon, 10.5km, 5km and 2km kids runs.
The Laguna Phuket Marathon will serve to showcase Phuket’s post-pandemic revival, as well as some of the island’s most scenic locations. The race starts and finishes at Laguna Grove, also taking runners on a path past small villages, rubber and pineapple plantations, and through the beautiful beachfront Sirinat National Park.
Entry restrictions to Thailand have eased since June 1, paving the way for runners to arrive in Phuket with no testing or quarantine requirements. Arrivals now need only register on the Thailand Pass to confirm their health insurance coverage of a minimum of US$10,000 and their vaccination status.
This will be the 16th Laguna Phuket Marathon, a race that has attracted more than 200,000 participants from some 70 countries over the years, and is now certified by the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS). The Laguna Phuket race is also an official qualifying event for the Boston Marathon.
When announcing the race, Charlie Jung, organiser of the Supersports Laguna Phuket Marathon and GAA Events assistant race director, said, “The Supersports Laguna Phuket Marathon is a popular destination marathon with runners from Thailand and overseas. It’s also an important event for Phuket – it supports the economy and local community, and this year will be an iconic showcase that Phuket is back and ready to welcome visitors from all around the world.
“With six distances from 2km to the full marathon, the event offers something for everyone and is an ideal weekend away for families who can take part in some healthy fun and family-friendly race weekend while also enjoying the full facilities of Laguna Phuket.”
The 2km kids run, 5km and 10.5km races will be held in the afternoon on Saturday, June 11, while the Half Marathon (21.0975km), Marathon Relay (42.195km) and Marathon (42.195km) events will run in the morning on Sunday, June 12.
Event participants and spectators are encouraged to give back to the local community also by helping to raise awareness and funds for Laguna Phuket Foundation’s Children First Fund (CFF), to support more than 400 underprivileged children in seven orphanages around Phuket.
For anyone unable to travel to Phuket this year to compete, Laguna Phuket Marathon has introduced its first Hybrid Race, giving runners anywhere in the world the chance to join the race virtually by using the Sportstats Tracker app. Runners who sign up for the Hybrid Race will be able to see their progress overlaid on the real event map, and their offsite results will be instantly available together with finishers of the race onsite in Phuket.
